I picked this book with enthusiasm
as I have seen numerous references to it on
blogs and the Internet. As someone who has tried
a couple of times to mobilize people towards
causes with mixed results I am intrigued by
what makes a tribe successful.
I didn't find the book easy to
read and that bothered me. Finally I realised
what my problem was - the structure is not what
my brain called structure so I was really into
beginners mind. There are no chapters. Content
flows and thoughts or points are grouped by
heading only.
And strange as it was to me the
books flow is the way a tribe works today. Leadership
for today's tribes can come from anywhere. They
don't have to be the 'boss' and they don't have
to be is the same physical proximity of other
tribe members. What they do need is to have
a passion and be able to communicate that in
a manner and method that mobilizes others. The
internet and social networking sites and software
makes today's tribes form outside what we culturally
consider the establishment.
So who is this book written for?
It's for anyone who wants to lead others towards
a common goal. The gem of this book is to challenge
the way teams are lead within the conventional
structure of business. A great example comes
from an experience of the author when he was
charged with creating a brand within the company
he worked for. He had no staff, no budget and
no influence to get resources working on his
project. So he started a newsletter and sent
it to everyone in the company. That newsletter
in time, built a tribe outside the reporting
structures of the company and in time that tribe
delivered some of the most profitable brands
in the company portfolio .
It may take a couple of
reads but it is worth the time. Look at it this
way, because the structure of the book is new
reading it forms new brain pathways and brain
experts tell us this is just what we need to
keep our brain vital and healthy.
