Departures
Departures
Yojiro Takita (Director)
DVD AUD34.95
Departures was a movie that I
had read a number of great reviews, yet managed
to miss it on the big screen. As it turned out
that didn't matter
it was just as beautiful
as I had imagined on the TV screen.
Set in Japan it tells the story of a Cello player
who after his orchestra closed, returned to
his hometown and began to search for work.
As you go with him on his job search the excellent
direction and film work takes you into his emotional
journey. The dialogue (sub titled) is minimal
and that adds to the grace and beauty of the
story.
The musical scenes are much less
that I imagined or even wanted, but were perfect
balance for the story.
An interesting character to watch
is his wife who is really ashamed of his work
and leaves him for a period of time.
When she returns she still wants
him to leave his work, until she watches him
perform the ceremony of preparation to the next
world and you can see by her facial expressions
the growing respect and love for him.
