Sarah McLachlan is back with her first full album of new material in seven years, picking up with more of the acoustic-tinged, folk-inflected indie rock that made her a sensation. Laws Of Illusion reflects McLachlan's own experiences with love lost, channeling the mixed emotions of relationships gone sour and new beginnings into the lyrical fabric of the album. True to form, she adds levity to weighty subject matter with her cotton candy wisps of ethereal vocals, where soul and sweetness dance amidst arrangements that blend piano, guitar, rhythm and a touch of keyboard melody. The album sways between mid-tempo numbers like "Illusions of Bliss" and "If U Want Me 2," the latter of which appeared on her 'Greatest Hits' album. McLachlan continues to show her deftness in capturing the heart with her ballads, in this case songs like "Forgiveness" and "Rivers of Love," where she works wonders with her piano, voice and a little percussion.
